Costs of avoiding net negative emissions under a carbon budget

چکیده

Abstract The 2 °C and 1.5 temperature targets of the Paris Agreement can be interpreted as never to exceeded, or end-of-century targets. Recent literature proposes move away from latter, in favour avoiding a overshoot associated net negative emissions. To inform this discussion, we investigate under which conditions an is economically attractive. We show that some form attractive wide range assumptions, even when considering extra damages due additional climate change optimisation process. For medium assumptions regarding mitigation costs damages, emissions leads increase total until 2100 5% 14%. However, only are low, high using low discount rate. Finally, if not fully reversible, become Under these conditions, may justified, especially non-monetary risks considered.

Avoiding mangrove destruction by avoiding carbon dioxide emissions.

T ens of millions of tons of CO2 emissions from mangrove deforestation may be avoided each year at an average cost of less than $10 per ton CO2, conclude Siikamäki et al. in their study (1) in PNAS. Avoiding CO2 emission from mangroves would have the beneficial side effect of protecting biodiversity. With careful selection of areas to be protected, increased protection of biodiversity could be ...

Increasing Emissions Certainty under a Carbon Tax

arious organizations and individuals, including issue-oriented advocacy groups, research institutes, business groups, and members of Congress, have recently proposed that the United States consider use of a carbon tax as the primary federal policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.1 A carbon tax establishes a fixed fee per unit of emissions and thereby provides a certain price incentive to cut...

Marginal Abatement Costs of Carbon-Dioxide Emissions: A Meta-Analysis

In this paper we carry out a meta-analysis of recent studies into the costs of greenhouse gas mitigation policies that aim at the long-term stabilization of these gases in the atmosphere. We find the cost estimates of the studies to be sensitive to the level of the stabilization target, the assumed emissions baseline, intertemporal optimisation, the choice of control variable (CO2 only versus m...

Climate Stabilization at 2°C and Net Zero Carbon Emissions

The goal to stabilize global average surface temperature at lower than 2°C above pre-industrial level has been extensively discussed in climate negotiations. A number of publications state that achieving this goal will require net anthropogenic carbon emissions (defined as anthropogenic emissions minus anthropogenic sinks such as carbon capture and sequestration and reforestation) to be reduced...

Soil Organic Carbon Redistribution by Water Erosion – The Role of CO2 Emissions for the Carbon Budget

A better process understanding of how water erosion influences the redistribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) is sorely needed to unravel the role of soil erosion for the carbon (C) budget from local to global scales. The main objective of this study was to determine SOC redistribution and the complete C budget of a loess soil affected by water erosion. We measured fluxes of SOC, dissolved org...
